HBML is open wednesday thursday friday from 4 - 8pm, and saturday from 2 - 5pm. you might drive by at another time and see that we are open, this is a fluke and cannot be relied on.

we are at 420 pleasant st, worcester ma, 01609 (google maps)

here’s directions from the comic book store:
go right out of the door, towards the used cd place that looks like a prison. when you get to blue jeans pizza, cross the street towards the white-hat bar, and keep going down that street. you’ll soon pass “pleasant medical complex”, which you’ll know by the allergen index posted on the sign. you’ll come to a big tower apartment with some picnic tables out front. cross at the crosswalk and then that’s it, you’re there.

here’s directions from the library:
ok, check your books out and then walk back across the desk against the flow of traffic, to the central exit. once outside, immediately cross the street towards ben franklin’s bookstore, which is a nice used bookstore and they have cats, and one time i bought a harry stephen keeler book there for $12. ok, wave to the supernaturally white girl who works there and turn right, with the bookstore on your left. cross the street towards the statue of the boy and the turtle having sex (this is real). you’ll want to go diagonally across the worcester common, which may be impossible, because they are constantly removing or building a reflecting pond or an ice skating rink, or excavating bodies. on the opposite corner of the common is pleasant st, you should see a huge glass building. with the building on your immediate left, go uphill towards the old adult video theatre, and past the old print shop where the guys were totally idiots. there’s like, a jam band nite club, and two dance clubs named after primary colors. KEEP GOING. you’ll go by a pupuseria, an urban clothing place, a botanica, and most likely a hair-braiding place. that’s cool. about now you should start seeing storefront churches and african clothing stores, and this is the crest of the hill you’ve been walking up. on the way down there’s some weird bars and a neighborhood network center, then the pickle barrel, where the small veggie patty grinder costs more than the veggie patty sandwich, but if you get the sandwich, you have to pay extra for lettuce tomato onions etc.. if you get the grinder, it’s included, so actually if you’re going to get everything, the grinder costs $.10 more and is 50% larger. after the pickle barrel there’s a cool hair salon that dudes sit in front of, then a convenience store with so far the best name for a convenience store that i have ever seen. i’m not going to give it away, if you really want to know, you can look for it on google maps. then what? ok, there’s another african clothing store, then a hair salon with a cool unity-themed sign, then, um, a food pantry i think? or maybe that was before. anyway, pretty soon you’ll see the third african clothing store, which is esther’s fashions, which is my favorite. the shoes in the window are very pointy, like a witch would wear, but they are for men. cross the street and there’s a park that isn’t open yet that last year was just mattresses and raccoon skeletons, then the mediterranean market and then HBML!

in re: parking
you can park on the sidestreet (bellevue) and you can park in the lot IF you’re facing the fence. but if you park in the lot facing the mediterranean market (which is great, and i’m there all the time buying spinach sandwiches), the guy will yell at you. fair enough!

here’s a map that may help:

  1. I couldn’t find HBML with the map provided, but I’m glad someone still remembers Jack Kirby’s “Kamandi” from the 70s. Just as cool: Mr. Miracle and Devil Dinosaur.
